Most college student are cute, young, and somewhat naive, but can carry on a conversation, just what clients want.
Which is especially true regarding the ability to carry on a conversation. I don't just say this as a PSO, but from my escorting experience as well.
Conversation is a skill unto itself. Conversing is different than the gift of gab, which can be nothing more than clutter & noise. Gab or chatter can actually alienate others, but conversation is inclusive. Conversation is the balance between being interesting and being interested.
Asking good questions & listening to the answers is being interested; adding your own thoughts or information is (hopefully) you being interesting. Deciding whether to either ask more questions or add your own thoughts is where the skill really comes in.
A natural curiosity helps. And of course, you can't be the master of scintillating conversation without keeping up with current events, pop culture classics, and, depending upon your clients, having some mastery of the classics. Otherwise, whatever will you talk about?
College students, usually, are being shown new things, learning new things, and so are able to carry on at least a minimal yet meaningful discussion -- or at least learn how to ask intelligent questions which add to the quality of conversation. But what happens when you are no longer in school?
Well, then you're going to keep schooling yourself. And the best way to do that is to read. Read, read, read, read, read.
Sex work can be isolating work, working on the Internet or not, and so reading is my number one pastime. For fascinating women such as myself, it helps to just be a book nerd. *wink* I have many magazine subscriptions, and read online too, but books are not just my favorite things, they are part of my continuing education.
If you're unsure where to begin your education, here are a few ideas.
Sexy Amanda Brooks, author of The Internet Escort's Handbook, has a sexy reading list. I'll admit that I've only read one of her suggested books, but have added quite a few of them to my wish list.
I also suggest reading non-sex works as well. For an eclectic mix of books (new and old), check the Sex Kitten's reading section.
If you're really desperate, you can always check the best sellers lists at Amazon, The New York Times etc. Personally, I find a lot of those works to be uninteresting; but that's just me. And don't overlook the fact that if so many are reading them, you'll likely have them mentioned to you.
Don't forget to ask your clients what they're reading or ask them for what authors or genres they like. Collectively it's likely to be a diverse selection of subjects and authors; I've always found my clients to have such incredibly arresting suggestions that I've never been bored.
Perhaps I'll add a reading list here one day... Until then, just get reading.

Thanks for the mention!
I also have a more in-depth look at conversational skills here, but this post of yours covers a lot of great points. I'm going to have to link back!

Ooh, that's an excellent post; thanks for posting it!
Thanks for the shout-out Rose! I appreciate it. :)
Incidentally, when I do advertise, I usually place ads without a photo and use my writing skills to create interesting ads that attract my type of clients. When they do respond, they often say "I really liked the wording of your ad and was curious to meet you." So it's not just the conversational skills, but my writing skills that show clients I'm more educated and intelligent that your average provider. It helps and I've gotten a lot of regulars from my different approach to sex work.
